nashville day 3 - November 4, 2009

well , after sleepin in my car last night behind the douglas corner bar... I headed down to broadway and plugged the parkin' meter for the 2 hours it would hold...I set up in the entrance of the alley right across from the
gruhn guitars and the honkey tonks that line that side of the street.
I had a lot of smiles, there was a hummer full of girls who loved my voice, I earned a 1 $ tip and sold a cd to some friendly folks from france whom I met on monday night! thanks yoan and company! I ate my lunch on that money!...while ordering my meal, I received a little chastising for my "make music not war" t-shirt. Apparently a lot of great songs have been written because of wars which is why the two things can and ought to co-exist. maybe this guy patrick missed the point. Then he followed up by giving me a lesson in latin... panera is translated ---bread time? so panera bread! is Bread time bread! I still feel like the silly one! funny nonetheless.

the writer's last night at the douglas corner bar were most excellent! I also recieved great response. I was asked by a very enchanting and talented writer lady if I was going to stay... saying I ought to stay and get a job at the cacker barrel... oh if life were that easy...

gotta admidt that I'm a little torn, but as long as I keep playing as much as I can and continue to meet with people... I'm content in hoping it's a dues paying process, and It won't be long before stars align in the correct order to allow me to continue the work I'm meant to.

Rusty nail tonight... who knows what tomorrow will bring? not me, but If I'm granted another day, I'm accepting it with open arms, open heart, and open mind...

I am humbled, and I feel myself growing. love from music city!

Recording -News from Scott's booking agent - September 27, 2009

The last week of September/1st week of October, Scott will be tied up recording. He's very interested in booking gigs, but this week his direct response may be delayed or I may get back to you for quicker response.

He's looking forward to launching more original songs. November Snow, the song he performed at the Big Top Chautauqua will be on this CD. What a great experience that was! It will be great to have this song available soon for audiences to play at home since their response at live performances has been so good. Thanks for your support, it is greatly appreciated.

new album coming soon - September 12, 2009

Over the last year or so I've been recording songs for my next album...
I am currently in the process of narrowing down the track list and preparing to go into the studio for mixing, mastering, and editing....
This next album is sort of my little "love child" ----most all songs went directly from ink, to paper, to "hit the record button" as well as all other instrumentation. It's me capturing my vision for each song directly after inception.
I'm happy to announce that "November Snow", the song that earned me my placing at the Big Top Chautauqua, will be included on this project.

Thanks for the continued support and I'm really looking forward to sharing the new album with you soon!

The Duluth Reader - September 8, 2009

After playing my gig in Duluth on sat I picked up a copy of the local news alternative and found this paragraph on page 41 in a section titled "Hot Tickets"

Songwriter Scott Kirby At Sir Benedicts Pub September 5

Scott Kirby From Rhinelander, Wis has been playing music and writing songs since he was 12. Over the last few years he has released two albums, his latest album Good Morning Jo, is a cutting edge bit of "blue-country-folk-grass" excellence. On August 27, Kirby proved his songwriting talents when he won second place at this year's songwriters competition at the Big Top Chautauqua. He was selected from hundreds of entries from across the nation and his unique sound made him truely standout among the other songwriters. This weekend he'll be playing at sir benedict's pub in Duluth at 8 pm. Be sure to check out this up and coming songwriter.

A Winner at the Big Top! - September 3, 2009

Happy to announce that I was selected as one of the winners at the Big Top Chautauqua songwriting competition. Heather Styka from Chicago was selected as grand prize winner.
It was such an amazing experience to open for Suzanne Vega, who put on one incredible performance. Her songs are intense and are carefully crafted with amazing melodies. I found that while she writes on a very complex level, words, phrasing, musicality...it is not completely inaccessible to the audience.
One of the true pleasures of the weekend was the time spent in the song circles. each person playing a song while others added what they could or just listened for the pure enjoyment. I found it to be a very inspiring time.

Jane, Dan, Ron, Claudia, Luke, Heather, Bill, Kate, the rest of the songwriters, all those with the Big Top blue canvas orchestra, the stage and sound and lighting crew, the volunteers, and the folks who came out in support,
a thousand thank you s ...

Big Top Chautauqua songwriting competition - August 13, 2009

I am excited to announce that I've been selected to perform at the big tent in Bayfield on Aug 27th as part of their celebration of the song festival!
This is an amazing opportunity.
If you can make it, please come up and show some support! it's a multiple day event with many workshops and losts of great music... check it out at www.bigtop.org

Sunday's are off! - July 10, 2009

In case you find yourself planning a trip to Sweetwater this summer, know that I will not be performing there on sundays as my calendar would mislead you to believe.
If you went, and I wasn't there; i'm sorry I apologize.
I guess that's what happens when there is an indirect line of communication. I'm sure they'll still have good music there anyways.

New album soon !!! - June 22, 2009

Today I'm down in Wausau with Mr. Marty Cheyka at the Whitehouse Recording Studios... we're kickin' it into full gear getting tracks together for my next album... dubbed the basement tapes...the title taken from a bob dylan recording but mostly due to the fact that most of the songs were recorded in the basement of my parent's house. Other tracks were recorded in my sanctuary at apple love music. Most of these songs will be new to you, some will be familiar. It has been quite fun to record the songs immediately after writing them. I feel this has been a great way to capture the essence of the song in it's purest form. music will be available for download right here at scottkirbymusic.com and will be available for sale on cd baby.com--and as always, at live shows. Thanks for your continued support as I release this new material. :)

Makin' hay when the sunshines... a novel idea! - May 28, 2009

Yes it's a well known saying---and it's one that continues to ring true even today, As summer comes into full swing I'll be busy with some good steady work. starting on the 14th of june- every sunday afternoon, I'll be at sweetwater in eagle river with CW, and Jerry, hopefully we'll have some special guests throughout the summer.

Tuesdays I'm gonna warm up the jug for tuck pence who I'll play with on wednesday nights, when he lets me.. :)

I'm having great fun playing thursday nights in mole lake just oustide of crandon, Mole lake has a certain energy to it that makes it very easy to jam out the tunes....come on down some thursday night with your instrument of choice and make some music happen...

A little known secret is that I've started hosting an open mic night at the northwestern, it starts late---11:15 pm give or take a few minutes...in all the places I've traveled to, there has always been an outlet for performers and artists alike...It is my hope that if and when people are inclined, they'll have an open stage to present a song or poem or political rant, or sketch comedy, or stand-up---
Any night that I'm not booked with a show I'll be there to host and to be social... :)
My good friends mike and justin have agreed to fill in and host for me when I'm absent--I'm very greatful for that... that means that we can keep it going...

Other than that I'm filling up saturdays as they come...

I'm hoping that by the time september rolls around, I'll be ready to hit the road for a few months to play music out east-- along the coast--- and down south---then out west...I'm gonna do whatever it takes to cover the whole continental U.S.---maybe... :)

If you can help me with any shows in any region---please let me know... thanks much and have a great summer!!!

Partner's Pub! - April 20, 2009

Last saturday I was at Partner's Pub in Stevens Point.
Thanks to everybody who was there, I had a pretty darn good time playing. Looking forward to making it back there sometime soon, quite possibly with a 3 to 4 piece band.. So.. in the meantime---call up the folks at 90.0 FM and request any of your favorite songs from the "good morning jo" record... Thanks Much :)

Spring fling! - April 13, 2009

The Jailhouse Bar in Rhinelander hosted a spring fling this past Saturday. Six bands performed throughout the day, ranging from acoustic to Hard Rock ; Metal to folk.
There was a fantastic turnout, and the energy of the crowd was warm enough to help melt the last sheets of Ice on the lake. Thanks to everyone who came out to support live music.

New photo--with buildings...and such - April 5, 2009

this photo was taken by Sarah---I met her in Chicago outside of Union Station. We had shared a train from Washington D.C. the day before. It was refreshing to sit outside in the city singing Woody Gutherie and Pete Seeger tunes, maybe a Dylan song or two-- and original tunes respectively.
I'm thinkin' I might use this for the cover of my next album... It's gonna have most of my travelin' songs---
